The community of Rodanthe North Caroline is one of many small unincorporated communities in Dare County. The community is located on Hatteras Island in the Outer Banks region. Along with the communities of Salvo and Wave, Rodanthe is part of the larger settlement of Chicamacomico. Growth in Rodanthe is limited as the community is bordered on two sides by water and the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge on the north and the Cape Hatteras National Seashore on the south. This limited growth ensures that the community keeps the small town maritime charm that makes it popular. The community gained fame as the backdrop of the novel “Nights in Rodanthe” by best-selling author Nicholas Sparks.
Historically, Rodanthe lies along the edge of the Graveyard of the Atlantic and due to this proximity the original Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station was established there in 1915 it was the very first of such stations along the North Carolina Coast and was a part of the U.S. Lifesaving Service which later became the Coast Guard. The most popular tale of the stations efforts was in 1918 when the British tanker the Mirlo was bombarded with torpedoes by the Germans, six men from the Chicamacomico crew dove into the waters and rescued 47 out of 57 passengers. The station was decommissioned in 1954, today the remaining buildings are a historic site which is maintained as a museum to hold artifacts and a site for re-enactments.
