The community of Hatteras is an unincorporated community in the Outer Banks region that is best known as a fishing and vacation destination. Hatteras is in Dare County, North Carolina south of Cape Hatteras. It is part of district 4 along with the communities of Buxton, Avon, Salvo and several other unincorporated communities in the area, Hatteras is governed by the Dare County Board of commissioners. The community has one main road that passes through it, North Carolina Highway 12 and due to its near isolation the town remains quiet and quaint, until tourism season. The community is blessed with beautiful beaches perfect for swimming, sunning and fishing.
Hatteras is named for the Hatteras Indians that first inhabited the area and this community is one of the few that retained their original names when the U.S. Postal Service arrived in the area.
The history of the community was a fairly uneventful one until hurricane Isabel hit the coast in September of 2003. A deep channel was washed at the north end of the village effectively cutting it off from the rest of the island. The Army Corps of Engineers filled in the channel and reunited the community with it’s neighbors. The children of Hatteras attend school at Cape Hatteras Elementary and Secondary Schools. The economy of the community is based solidly in tourism and the fishing industry.
Due to the areas geography and the lay of ocean currents the area is blessed with the largest surf waters available on the East Coast. The waters of Pamlico Sound offer the perfect setting for windsurfing, kite boarding, swimming and kayaking. The community of Hatteras is home to a unique museum, the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum. This museum houses the original Fresnel lamp and its rotating pedestal from the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, as well was many other artifacts and a quaint little gift shop.
Hatteras is a vacationers dream and a residents warm and welcoming hometown, with sandy beaches, waves, fishing waters, a rich maritime history and so much more. Real estate in the area is mostly of the rental nature aimed toward the flourishing Outer Banks tourist industry. Homes for sale and rent in the area are primarily of the middle class variety and most often are located along the beach.
