Corolla

Corolla, North Carolina is a part of the Poplar Branch township and is an unincorporated beach community. It is located along the northern edge of the Outer Banks region in Currituck County. This small community has approximately 500 permanent residents, but during the height of the tourist season the population swells into the thousands. The pride of the community is the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, which is one of seven well-known coastal lighthouses in the state. The first inhabitants of the region where Native Americans of Chowanoke and Poteskeet tribes who had hunting grounds along the barrier island. The first American town developed there was settled by European Americans and called Jones Hill. Early inhabitants mostly earned a living from fishing and hunting and treasure hunting from shipwrecks. The local economy diversified and stablized with the construction of the Currituck Beach Lighthouse which created new jobs for locals. The name Corolla was given to the community in 1895 with the arrival of postal service. Modern development of the area began in 1967 but the community did not gain a public access road until 1984. With that two lane road being the only way in and out the community of Corolla remains somewhat isolated making it the perfect place to get away from it all.

Most available real estate in the area is rental property aimed at summer rentals. Homes for sale and apartments for sale or lease are harder to come by. Most housing in Corolla is of the upper middle class style or beach house style with plenty contemporary luxuries available. This quaint beach community encourages a healthy outdoor living and a peaceful atmosphere.
Local attractions include the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education in Currituck Heritage Park, an animal sanctuary that is home to a herd of 119 feral Banker horses which are protected and provided for by the The Corolla Wild Horse Fund, and the Currituck Banks North Carolina National Estuarine Research Reserve.
